Day of Action volunteers still needed

Additional volunteers are needed to help the United Way complete community service projects at non-profit organizations throughout the Wabash Valley during Day of Action 2012.

The service day runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday. A kickoff, which includes breakfast, gets under way at 7:30 a.m. at the Zorah Shrine Temple.

The number of volunteers needed at four project sites — Kid Kare Projects Inc., St. Ann Community Outreach Services, United Way of the Wabash Valley and Valley Child Development Center — has already been attained. Volunteers have stepped forward to work on other service projects, some outdoors, some inside, but more are required in order to complete the much-needed work.

Following is a list of sites still needing volunteers:

Bright Hope Riders of the Wabash Valley

Construction and extension of existing pasture electric fence

Five volunteers needed; volunteers must be of high school age or older.

Catholic Charities of Terre Haute — Ryves Youth Center

Computer repair; organize storage rooms; organize libraries; etc.

21 volunteers needed; general cleaning, organizing and computer repair. Several areas within the youth center will be cleaned and organized; these areas include the libraries, Bonus Point Store, classrooms and preschool area. People who have skills with computers will be used to assess and repair donated computers as well as update the computers in the lab.

Clay County Senior Center

Painting, shampooing carpets

Nine volunteers needed; volunteers will be helping to paint the dining room and outside trim of the building, and shampooing carpets.

Dobbs Park

Removal of invasive plants

14 volunteers needed; volunteers should report to the Native American Museum in Dobbs Park.

Families By Choice

Women’s Shelter


Fence assembly and painting

Eight volunteers needed; volunteers will be helping to put up a fence and will also be painting the fence.

FSA Counselling

Three-room painting project

13 volunteers needed.

Humane Society of Sullivan County

Power wash, organize garage, install cabinets, and care for animals

Six volunteers needed; besides the above tasks, various others will be available as well.

ISU Community Gardens

Garden maintenance

15 volunteers needed; various other tasks will be available as well.

Light House Mission

Sorting and cleaning

One volunteer needed; volunteers will be helping the Light House Mission sort through items and clean the gym at the Conners Center to get ready for its move at the end of the summer.

Park-Vermillion County Humane Society

General cleaning, painting and landscaping at shelter

Five volunteers needed; volunteers will be painting and cleaning shelter as well as mulching, filling holes, etc.

Sisters of Providence

White Violet Center

Three volunteers needed; volunteers can choose between working in the organic garden or helping in the routine care of alpacas.

Terre Haute Catholic

Charities Food Bank

Painting, striping and cleaning

13 volunteers needed; volunteers will be painting floors and border lines inside the warehouse, striping the food bank parking lot, cleaning the walk-in cooler and freezer, and repairing lighting.

United Child Care

Gardening with children

Three volunteers needed; volunteers will be working with the children to plant flowers and help them start a vegetable garden.

Vigo County Historical Society

Transplanting plants

Three volunteers needed; volunteers will be helping transplant plants to locations around the building.

Vigo County Public Library

Shelf maintenance

Five volunteers needed; volunteers will be helping repair shelves.
