British Sports Car Club plans summer solstice celebration

TERRE HAUTE — The Wabash Valley British Sports Car Club is planning a summer solstice celebration drive to take in history and scenery between Terre Haute and Vincennes.

The motor tour will take off at 9:30 a.m. June 16 from the parking lot across from Hulman Center, on the northwest corner of Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early to have breakfast in the Clabber Girl bake shop and to take in the Hulman and Co. museum, both on the ground floor of the Hulman and Co. building.

The morning drive stint will be approximately 57 miles and will include visits to Irishman’s Covered Bridge in Fowler Park and a stop at the community park in Merom that overlooks the Wabash River from the top of Merom Bluff.

Lunch will be at the Cow Town bar and grill in Carlisle.

In the afternoon, the group will have about a 30-mile stint to historic Vincennes. While there, the group will visit the George Rogers Clark National Historic Park, Grouseland (the home of President William Henry Harrison), the buildings of the Indiana Territorial Capital and Vincennes University.

Stops at the university will include a tour of the robotics and computer-integrated manufacturing labs (considered to be among the best in the nation) and the new Red Skelton Center for the Performing Arts.

Tour participants wanting to stay overnight in Vincennes can get a group rate at Holiday Inn Express, 220 Battery Road, provided reservations are made by Sunday and they indicate they are part of the Wabash Valley British Sports Car Club group.

Anyone with an interest in or an enthusiasm for British motoring is welcome. Registration for the event is not required, but a confirmation of intent to participate would be appreciated. Contact Rob Blubaugh, president, WVBSCC at (219) 863-0331 or by email at robblubaugh@netscape.net.
