Fog a factor in West Terre Haute accident

TERRE HAUTE — Heavy fog contributed to a two-vehicle accident involving a West Terre Haute patrolman at 7:21 a.m. Monday.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reports that Patrolman Jonathan Stevens was driving east on U.S. 40 when a pickup truck pulled out in front of his vehicle.

Motorist Eric Davis told police was stopped on Schley Place waiting to merge into westbound traffic when he pulled out. Due to the heavy fog, Davis said he did not see the oncoming car.

Stevens had to be extricated from his patrol car and was taken to Union Hospital where he was treated and released.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Davis was cited for expired driver’s license and having no insurance on his vehicle.

Responding to the accident scene were units from the sheriff’s department, Indiana State Police, West Terre Haute Police, Sugar Creek Fire Department, Terre Haute Fire Department and TransCare.
