New ‘Y’ moves closer to May opening

Clay YMCA raising funds, adding members for sound financial start

TERRE HAUTE — The new Vigo County YMCA is prepared to open its doors May 21 if two goals are met first — raising $100,000 and getting 320 people to purchase memberships.

Deborah Plummer, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Clay County, which will manage the Vigo County YMCA, said the agency needs to generate about $500,000 to cover expenses for the remainder of this year and will then need to generate just under $1 million annually to cover staff and building costs.

The YMCA has obtained $45,000 so far from donations and grants and has four grant applications seeking an additional $40,000 toward its $100,000 goal, Plummer said Monday during a news conference at the Vigo County YMCA in Fairbanks Park.

“It is amazing for us just to be able to ... expand what we already do in a community to have a wider reach and a greater possibility for impact,” Plummer said.

“When we talk about YMCA services, we want it to be inclusive and available for all, and we didn’t want that to be just Clay County.”

Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said the YMCA of Clay County expressed an interest in the building after the December 2010 closing of the former Riverbank Family & Fitness Center. Since then the city has been working with the YMCA board to take over the facility.

“It couldn’t be any more exciting to put this facility back to use,” the mayor said. “We have maintained the building since it closed up, and now the Y will be taking that over,” Bennett said, adding it will help the city’s park department budget, which will no longer pay for maintenance.

“It also opens this huge asset up in a great park that will be used by the entire community, so it is kinda a win-win situation for everybody,” Bennett said.through the Summer Food Program and CHANCES for Indiana Youth,” Plummer said.

Donations to the Vigo County YMCA, which are tax deductible, can be made at any First Financial Bank branch or online at claycountyymca.org. The organization expects to have a website for the Vigo County YMCA — vigocountyymca.org — in operation within a week.

There is a working email address for the Vigo County facility at info@vigocountyymca.org.

Monday was the start of the membership drive, and anyone who joins by May 21 will have a $20 joiner fee waived as a way to encourage membership.

Plummer said memberships will show that the Vigo County community is interested in and committed to having a YMCA. The agency will offer financial assistance to qualified low-income residents, which can save 50 to 75 percent of the cost.

“Memberships are a one-year commitment, but we encourage you to pay monthly,” Plummer said.

The family memberships, for married couples with children, is $43 a month, plus a $20 joiners fee. That is $536 for the year.

There is also a single-parent family membership of $34 per month, plus the $20 joiners fee, which is $428 per month.

Adult membership is $31 per month, plus a $20 joiners fee or $392 per year. A young adult membership, ages 14 to 19, is $17.40 per month plus a $10 joiners fee, or $222 per year. A youth membership, for ages 3 to 13, is $8.50 per month plus a $10 joiners fee or $112 per year.

A couples’ membership, for married couples based on IRS tax guidelines, is $37 a month, plus a $20 joiners fee, or $464 per year. Senior citizen membership, for ages 62 and older, is $17 per month, plus a $20 joiner fee or $224 a year. A senior couple membership, for married couples 62 an older, is $19 a month, plus a $20 joiners fee, or $248 a year.
