TERRE HAUTE —
The slate is set for the May 8 primary election, with the race for three at-large seats on the Vigo County Council drawing the largest pool of candidates at the county level.
Noon Friday was the deadline to file for ballot access in the 2012 Indiana primary election.
Eight Democrats and four Republicans, including the county GOP chairman, filed for the council. Republicans who filed are Craig A. Bales, Steve Ellis, Lonnie Moody and Bill Treadway, who serves as the party chairman.
Democrat candidates include incumbent council members Mark D. Bird, William C. Bryan and Ed Ping — along with Adam S. Azar, Richard Burger, Saretta J. Brown, Curtis A. DeBaun and Ann M. O’Brien.
In another race, a former county auditor and a Terre Haute City Councilman will square off for the Democratic nomination for county treasurer.
Don Morris was elected last year to his second four-year term on the City Council. He will face James W. Bramble, who was elected in a Democratic party caucus in 2000 to fill out the remainder of a term as county auditor for Judith Anderson, who had won election as Terre Haute mayor.
Bramble won election in 2000 for auditor and served in that seat for two terms, from 2001 to 2008.
Current Vigo County Treasurer David Crockett is seeking the Democratic nomination for county clerk. He will face Democrat C. Dwayne Malone. Crockett, who has served the past eight years as county treasurer, is limited to two consecutive terms in office under state law.
Democrats Sean P. Feeney and Judith A. Anderson, an incumbent, are candidates for the District 2 seat on the Vigo County Board of Commissioners. Incumbent Commissioner Paul Mason is unopposed in the primary race for the District 3 commissioner seat.
Susan S. Amos, who served two terms as county coroner from 1997 to 2004, filed for the Democrat nomination for coroner. Current Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr, a pathologist, is limited to two consecutive terms in office under state law. Kohr previously served as coroner eight years before Amos was elected in 1996.
Other unopposed races include incumbent Vigo County Recorder Nancy S. Allsup, a Democrat, who filed for re-election for a second term; incumbent Democrat Timothy Seprodi, who filed for a second term as county auditor; and Democrat Michael J. Lewis
At the federal level, Republican U.S. Rep. Larry D. Bucshon will face tea party candidate Kristi Risk for the GOP nomination in the Eighth Congressional District. Democrat David Crooks, a former state representative who won an endorsement in a party caucus of Democratic chairs and vice chairs from the district’s 19 counties, will face Democrat candidates William Bryk and Thomas Barnett.
Incumbent Sen. Richard G. Lugar will face Richard E. Murdock, the current state treasurer, for U.S. Senate, while Democrat Joe Donnelly is unopposed for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate.
President Barack Obama is uncontested for the Democrat nomination, while the Republican ballot includes Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Patricia Inez Sandifer, according to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office.
At the state level, current U.S. Rep. Mike Pence is the lone GOP candidate for Indiana governor, while John R. Gregg, former Indiana House Speaker, is the lone Democrat candidate for governor. Gov. Mitch Daniels is limited to two consecutive terms under state law and cannot run again this year.
In Indiana House of Representative races, Republicans Jim Meece, Alan P. Morrison and Bill Webster will compete for the District 42 seat. Mark Spelbring is the lone Democratic candidate for District 42.
Democratic incumbent Rep. Clyde Kersey is unopposed, while John Cunningham is unopposed as the Republican candidate, in the race for the District 43 seat in the Indiana House. Incumbent Rep. James (Jim) Baird is unopposed for the GOP nomination for the District 44 House seat. No Democrats filed for that seat.
Republican incumbent Bruce Alan Borders is unopposed for the Indiana District 45 House seat. Kreg Battles is unopposed as a Democratic candidate for the House District 45 seat.
