July trial date set for mother charged with child neglect

TERRE HAUTE — A July 30 trial date has been set for a Terre Haute mother charged with neglecting and battering her toddler.

Colleen Marie Amos, 25, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Thursday where Judge  John Roach also set a hearing for Feb. 24 on a bond reduction request by defense attorney William Frankel. Her bail is set bail at $35,000 with no 10 percent allowed.

The judge also noted that a mental health evaluation is planned for Amos.

According to the charging information filed with the court, Amos faces four felonies related to the Feb. 3 incident which resulted in her mother taking the 19-month-old child to the hospital after noticing apparent injuries on the toddler.

A charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, a class-B felony, stems from the allegation that Amos consumed alcohol and caused the child to have a concussion, head trauma and contusions.

Charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a person less than 14 years of age, a class-B felony, and battery resulting in bodily injury, a class-D felony, both stem from the allegation that Amos battered the child, resulting in a concussion, head trauma and contusions.

A charge of neglect of a dependent resulting bodily injury, a class-C felony, stems from the allegation that Amos drank heavily and caused the child to have a concussion, head trauma and contusions.

Deputy Prosecutor Raeanna Moore told judge Roach that the child remains in foster care. He was placed in foster care at the decision of the Department of Child Services.

Amos has a criminal history that includes a 2007 conviction for driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance. She served a portion of her sentence as an inpatient at the Richmond State Hospital.
