Man sentenced for 2011 shooting death

TERRE HAUTE — A man received a 45-year prison sentence — with five of those years suspended — in connection with a September 2011 shooting death that occurred on Terre Haute’s south side.

Charles Jarrett was sentenced Monday in Superior Court Division 1 as part of a plea agreement. Initially charged with murder, he was accused in the shooting death of 32-year-old Kenard Gipson, who was staying at a home in the 1800 block of South Eighth Street on the night he died.

An armed robbery gone bad was identified by police as the alleged motive in the  homicide. Jarrett previously lived in Delaware and Pennsylvania before coming to Terre Haute.

Under a plea agreement filed in July, the charge of murder was to be reduced to class-A felony voluntary manslaughter. A second criminal charge of failure to register as a sex offender was dismissed.

Judge John Roach accepted the plea agreement and sentenced Jarrett to 45 years, with 40 to be served in prison and five years to be suspended. Jarrett also will be placed on formal probation for five years.

According to terms of the plea agreement, when Jarrett has two years remaining on his executed sentence, he may petition the court for a sentence modification.

Gipson was a native of Cook County, Ill.

When the shooting occurred, the house on South Eighth Street had been under surveillance by the Vigo County Drug Task Force for some time, and police had received complaints from neighbors about drug trafficking at the house.
