Citizen helps police free man from car

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Sheriff’s Department is lauding a citizen for his assistance at the scene of a motor vehicle accident.

Sgt. Clay White on Saturday was dispatched to South Indiana 63 near Farmer Drive to locate a man (later identified as James Allen, 65) who had wrecked his car. The vehicle had gone off 63 and down an embankment. Allen was trapped in his car because it was pinned between trees and brush. Allen had called 911 in an attempt to assist deputies in finding his location.

White was the first officer to arrive in the area. After searching, he found a possible location of where a vehicle might have gone off the roadway. He then began his search on foot. In the meantime, a passer-by, Carl Phillips, saw the officer and stopped to offer assistance.

White and Phillips found the car and made their way down a steep embankment. Phillips began to clear the brush and trees away from the passenger side of the vehicle. White and Phillips were then able to then assist the man from the vehicle. Reserve Deputy Clint Reynolds then assisted White and Phillips in getting the driver up the embankment.

Without Phillips’ assistance, police said, it would have been very difficult for deputies to assist Allen. “Mr. Phillips went above and beyond to assist in helping a person he did not know,” said a sheriff’s department news release.

Allen was shaken from the incident, but was not injured.
