Area 7 increasing transportation fee

One-way trip will now cost $2

TERRE HAUTE — Because of increased fuel and maintenance costs, along with a decrease in funding, Area 7 Transportation Services plans to raise its one-way trip fares to $2, an increase of 50 cents, effective Oct. 1. Gloria Wetnight, assistant director of programs on aging and disabled at West Central Indiana Economic Development District, said that agency has requested the increase from the Indiana Department of Transportation. The agency nearly three years ago reduced its one-way fare from $3 to $1.50 to encourage more ridership, Wetnight said. However, rural transportation funding for the Area 7 Transportation Services will be cut $15,000 effective Jan. 1. Overall, the Area 7 Programs on Aging and Disabled are being cut $175,000 from the state Family and Social Services Administration, Wetnight said. “We want to increase the fare and income so we do not decrease the services,” Wetnight said. The 50-cent increase is expected to generate about $3,000, enough to help maintain services, she said. Area 7 Transportation Services from July 2011 through June 2012 provided 21,708 trips to 527 people in Vigo, Vermillion and Parke counties. The agency operates seven vans for rural transportation service and appointment for rides must be made a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Trips can be made for medical appointments; groceries; work; and personal trips such as going to a bank, beauty shop or visit a friend at a nursing facility, no matter a person’s age or ability. The agency also provides lift-equipped rural public transportation in Vigo County. Starting next week, each Area 7 van will post a notice of the requested increase, Wetnight said.
