TERRE HAUTE —
Hurricane Sandy hasn’t finished her course by any means, but volunteers from Terre Haute were en route to the scene on the Atlantic Coast this weekend.
Carol Stevens, executive director of the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter, said Sunday afternoon people and supplies are already on the way.
Rick Burger, district manager of Duke Energy, said individual employees have not yet been dispatched to the East Coast, but the company has allowed some of its contractors to go particpate.
Meanwhile, according to Stevens, local volunteers include Virginia and Don Gorrell who are driving the local chapter’s Emergency Response Vehicle to a staging area in Harrisburg, Pa. That vehicle is designed to transport supplies and meals between locations, offering a “mass care approach,” she said.
Wendy Taylor will travel to White Plains, N.Y., another staging area, she added, noting her role will be to help with shelter operations.
“Certainly we would appreciate any gift people would want to give toward disaster relief,” Stevens said.
