ISU apartment fire contained

TERRE HAUTE — No injuries were reported in a fire Thursday morning on the fourth floor of Indiana State University Apartments at First and Crawford streets, across from Fairbanks Park.

The fire broke out about 10:30 a.m. The Terre Haute Fire Department contained the fire to one room; however, the west wing of the fourth floor sustained smoke and water damage, and some doors were damaged when firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, said ISU Police Chief Bill Mercier.

Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher said the exact cause of the fire is undetermined.

“We know it started on or around the couch in the room, but don’t know how,” Fisher said. “We are ruling the fire accidential. We know it was not arson and was not suspicious.

“The good thing is those rooms are concrete and brick, so it was contained in one room. When firefighters got in the room, half of the room was filled with smoke and they could see the couch on fire, so they knocked

that down pretty quick,”

Fisher said.

Firefighters threw foam rubber cushions, mattresses and small wood tables from the room’s fourth-floor window to prevent the contents from catching fire.

Billy Allen, a junior at ISU majoring in history, said the fire started in room 426. His room is just down the hall.

“I am a heavy sleeper, but I am glad the fire alarm went off,” Allen said. “I woke up to the alarms and got dressed. I saw smoke in the hallway. When I got downstairs and outside I could see fire.”

Ahmed Aodousri, a sophomore at ISU majoring in human resources development, carried out a small book about 11:45 a.m. Thursday with burned pages from his room, where the fire was contained.

“I was at class. I came back and the room was on fire,” Aodousri said. “I don’t know what caused it.”

Tara Singer, ISU assistant vice president for communications and marketing, said residents of impacted apartment units on the west wing were relocated within University Apartments.
