TERRE HAUTE — A fire early morning Saturday destroyed a home in the 400 block of South Seventh Street, leaving two pets dead and several people searching for a place to live.
The fire started about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, said Lewis Berry, who lived in a downstairs apartment in the home. No one was hurt in the fire, he said.
“It spread incredibly fast,” Berry said. Smoke filled the lower level of the home within 10 minutes, he said.
The home appears to be a total loss. Charred timbers and furniture were lying on the front lawn Monday afternoon as Berry was loading a pickup truck with his daughter’s toys and clothes that were not destroyed.
Two pet dogs were killed in the fire while a third dog survived, Berry said.
The Red Cross helped Berry and another tenant in the home, Steven Perry, find temporary lodging, Berry said, adding that he did not want to speculate as to a possible cause of the fire.
Terre Haute fire officials could not be reached for additional information Monday.
