Trip to Children’s Museum helps make the day for these mothers

TERRE HAUTE — The art of motherhood met science and technology Sunday, as families mixed holiday fun with education.

Children bobbed about the exhibits inside the Terre Haute Children’s Museum as their parents took advantage of free admission for moms on Mother’s Day. A first for the facility, executive director Lynn Hughes said the program is likely to be repeated.

“We’ll probably do the same thing for Father’s Day,” she said that afternoon, noting the idea turned out to be a success. “It’s been nice to see the kids come in and make cards for their moms.”

In addition to free admission for their mothers, kids were invited to make cards in the downstairs classroom, watch educational videos about motherhood, and participate in a special Mother’s Day scavenger hunt.

Kari and Duane Lough brought their children, Drew, 5, and Brooke, 3, from Rockville for the event.

“We thought it would be fun to spend Mother’s Day here,” Kari said.

Meanwhile, Drew was busy constructing pipelines in a tank of running water, assembling the connectors and making fountains at the exhibit on the second floor. “We try to come here often,” she said, adding her son enjoys science and technology-related activities.

Jenny Behnke said Sunday was the first time she’d brought her 3-year-old son, Joseph, to the museum. In addition the tanks of running water and plastic pipes, the second floor features gated play areas and farming exhibits.

“He doesn’t know,” Behnke chuckled about her son’s scientific endeavors. “He just likes interacting. He likes fun things to do.”

Hughes said the museum is gearing up for the summer, and Mother’s Day or not, families have lots to do there. Registrations are being taken for the museum’s summer camp, with programs ranging from “The Force Academy” to “Heroes and Heroines.”

Construction is nearly done on the third-floor projects, which will bring the first live animals to the facility, including tarantulas, snakes and frogs.

“We’ll have six tanks of them,” she said, emphasizing the draw those creatures have for kids.

But even without the animals, families said they had fun Sunday.

Chris Warford and his fiancée Brittany Haney brought their two daughters, Kaylee, 9 and Lilly, 5, for their first trip to the museum.

“She wanted to come out with the girls and do something special,” Warford said. “So far they’ve really liked it. They’re having a good time. They made her some cards downstairs and she really enjoyed that.”
