CASA issues request for volunteers

TERRE HAUTE —

The Vigo County CASA program trains community volunteers to speak up on behalf of foster children’s safety and well-being. They do this by being their voice and speaking as to the best interest of the children they represent in juvenile court proceedings.

The first quarter of 2012 saw a record-breaking increase of substantiated child abuse cases in Vigo County. The CASA program, which includes more than 100 trained and active volunteers, is struggling to ensure every child has an advocate to represent their needs and wishes.

“The need is greater now than ever before,” said CASA director Nikki Fuhrmeister. “Our waiting list continues to grow. At any given time, our wait list runs around 30-35 children who need an advocate.

“We know there are caring people out there who may not know about CASA volunteering and/or have been waiting to get involved. … Please do not wait. We need you. The children need you. Now.”

The CASA program has launched a new community awareness program to recruit volunteers. “We want to meet every group, club and organization in Vigo County and share with them the amazing things CASA is doing for children and how this community can make a significant difference in the lives of children,” said Missy Rohrbach, volunteer coordinator.

CASA will begin training a new group of volunteers on May 30. The training curriculum comprises 30 hours pre-service training covering topics from the role of the CASA volunteer to laws, report writing to understanding children and families among other topics. In addition, there will be juvenile courtroom observation.

Anyone in the community who wants to get involved can contact the Vigo County CASA office at (812) 231-5658, email Nikki.Fuhrmeister@VigoCounty.IN.gov or visit www.VigoCounty
