Deputy — in court on crutches — testifies about alleged battery

TERRE HAUTE — A Vigo County Sheriff’s deputy appeared in court on crutches Wednesday to testify about his injuries during the apprehension of a West Terre Haute man wanted on a warrant.

Deputy Chris Jones told Judge Michael Lewis in Vigo Superior Court 6 that he has injuries to his patellar tendon, calf muscle and a torn meniscus in his knee joint from the struggle with Keith A. Dickerson.

Sheriff’s department Detective Tim Osborn also said that Jones will need a work assignment adjustment during his recovery.

The struggle with Dickerson occurred when Jones and Deputy Gary Ater went to a residence Monday in the 2300 block of Beech Drive in West Terre Haute to serve the warrant on Dickerson.

When deputies knocked on the door of the residence, Osborn said, Dickerson jumped out a rear window of the home.

Jones chased Dickerson into a ravine behind the residence. Dickerson reportedly struck Jones repeatedly with his fists and allegedly attempted to take Jones’ sidearm.

Ater went into the ravine to assist Jones, and Ater was able to handcuff a still-resisting Dickerson, according to authorities. Jones was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Ater received a minor injury.

Lewis found probable cause for Dickerson’s arrest on charges of attempting to disarm a police officer resulting in bodily injury, a class-B felony, as well as two class-D felony counts of battery on police, and a class-A misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement.

Lewis set bail at $75,000 cash only. Formal charges are to be filed Monday.

Meanwhile, Dickerson also faces bail at $35,000 cash only on the unrelated charges of possession of a controlled substance, a class-C felony, and a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear in court, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

The judge set a May 16 court date for that case.
