House District 42: Morrison gets win

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County resident Alan Morrison won by a slim margin of victory in the Republican primary for House District 42.

By just 198 votes, Morrison defeated Parke County native Jim Meece, who recorded an overwhelming victory in his home county but placed third in Vermillion, Vigo, Clay, Fountain and Warren counties behind Morrison and third contender Bill Webster, also of Parke County.

“I knew I basically needed to sweep everywhere else and just not do too badly in Parke County,” Morrison said Tuesday night from his northeastern Vigo County home, where he was monitoring election returns with families and friend.

District 42 covers portions of six counties in west-central Indiana. The house seat is now held by F. Dale Grubb, who is retiring at the end of his term in December.

While Meece had a huge victory in Parke County where he received 1,229 votes, followed by Webster at 572 and Morrison at 414.

“It’s awfully gratifying to win,” Morrison said. “Obviously I’m happy as can be. I’m really proud of the job all of the volunteers did. We all put so much time in.”

He said he plans to undergo knee surgery on Friday to repair an injury he sustained while going door-to-door during his campaign. But once he’s healed, he plans to get back on the campaign trail for the November race against Democrat challenger Mark Spelbring, who was unopposed in the primary.

Reached at home, Meece said he was ready for a close primary race.

“We’re proud of the race we ran. We never had a negative ad,” he said. “I’m proud of the people who helped me, and proud of the people who voted for me.”
