County officer injured while serving warrants

WEST TERRE HAUTE — A Vigo County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Monday evening in the apprehension of a West Terre Haute man wanted on warrants.

A second deputy received minor injuries.

Deputy Chris Jones was injured in a struggle with Keith A. Dickerson, 33, at about 5:27 p.m., when officers went to a residence in the 2300 block of Beech Drive in West Terre Haute.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom reports that when deputies knocked on the door of the residence, Dickerson jumped out a rear window of the home. Deputy Jones chased Dickerson and grabbed him. Both Jones and Dickerson rolled down a ravine behind the residence as Dickerson continued to resist the deputy, Cottom said, with Dickerson striking Jones repeatedly with his fists. Dickerson also allegedly attempted to take Deputy Jones’ sidearm. Deputy Gary Ater went into the ravine to assist Deputy Jones, and Dickerson resisted Ater as well. Ater was able to handcuff Dickerson, who was taken from the ravine by Deputies Jason Washburn and Matthew Barts.

Deputy Jones remained on the ground injured, and was taken from the scene by ambulance to Union Hospital for treatment. Deputy Ater received minor cuts from the altercation.

Dickerson, who was wanted on warrants for possession of a controlled substance, a class-C felony, and a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear in court, was arrested for attempting to disarm a police officer, a class-B felony, possession of a controlled substance and battery on police, both class-C felonies, as well as resisting law enforcement and maintaining a common nuisance.

Also arrested at the residence were Kelly Jo Lindsey for maintaining a common nuisance and resisting police; Mallorie Lindsey for visiting a common nuisance and a civil warrant; and Cheryl A. Harris for visiting a common nuisance.

Indiana State Police also arrested Justin Lee Fulmer on a warrant for failure to appear in court.

Assisting at the scene were Sugar Creek Fire, TransCare Ambulance and West Terre Haute Police and the Terre Haute Police departments.
