Garfield Towers resident, injured in fire, dies

TERRE HAUTE — A man who sustained burns in the Garfield Towers fire has died at an Indianapolis hospital.

A spokesman for Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis confirmed that resident Freddie Poore died Tuesday. An autopsy is planned by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Detective Lt. Ed Tompkins, arson investigator with the Terre Haute Police Department, said he did not have an opportunity to talk with the victim about how the fire may have started. It was unclear if Poor was in the lounge when the fire started.

Poore had been talking to firefighters just after his rescue from the sixth-floor lounge area of the apartment building, witnesses reported. The man was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute for treatment, but was then airlifted to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he had been listed in critical condition. Poore slipped into a coma after being hospitalized.

Tompkins said the man died around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday.

Tompkins continues to investigate the fire, and asks anyone with information about it to contact him at THPD by calling 244-2207.

The fire broke out before 9 p.m. Thursday. All residents, except those on the sixth floor, have been allowed to return to their homes.
