18-year-old mother charged with child neglect after infant injured

TERRE HAUTE — An 18-year-old mother has been charged with child neglect related to injuries sustained by a Terre Haute infant in April.

Amber R. Wills faces a class-B felony charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. She appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Tuesday where a public defender was appointed to her case.

Court records state that Detective Todd Kennedy of the Terre Haute Police Department reported that Wills took the 4-month-old child to the emergency room at Terre Haute Regional Hospital on April 19 after she allegedly found the child with breathing problems. She stated that she had left the baby on a bed while she went into another room, and the child rolled off the bed. She said she put the baby into its crib, and later found it was having trouble breathing.

The child was transferred from Regional Hospital to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. A doctor there told Detective Kennedy that the child’s injuries were not consistent with rolling off a bed. The child had a skull fracture, subgaleal hematoma, and bruises on a knee and foot.

Kennedy reported that a boyfriend of Wills said the young mother took several xanax in the hours prior to the infant’s injuries.

Wills is being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $50,000 no 10 percent allowed. She is to return to court Thursday for setting of trial dates.
