UPDATE: Garfield Towers reopens to residents

TERRE HAUTE — A resident of Garfield Towers remains in critical condition in the burn unit at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis today.

Meanwhile, most residents displaced by the Thursday night fire on the sixth floor of the apartment building have been allowed to return to their homes. The American Red Cross will be officially closing its shelter at Terre Haute North Vigo High School at 4 p.m. today.

Jeff Stewart, director of the Terre Haute Housing Authority, said the residents of the sixth floor will be housed temporarily in area motels until repairs can be made to that floor. The Red Cross will continue to work with those individuals currently unable to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire in the lounge area of the sixth floor remains under investigation.
