UPDATE: I-70 accident closes Interstate, two possible fatalities

ISP says East-bound lanes could be closed for several hours

TERRE HAUTE — East-bound Interstate 70 is blocked east of Terre Haute due to a fatal accident just east of the Indiana 46 exit.

Traffic is stopped along east-bound I-70 and the U.S. 41 exit east-bound is closed to traffic.

West-bound I-70 remains open.

Indiana State Police believe two people were killed in the crash, which involved an east-bound semitrailer slowing for a construction zone and then being struck in the rear by a second semitrailer.

Two occupants were believed to be in the second semitrailer, the cab of which caught fire and became partially detached from its trailer. Both individuals in the second semitrailer are believed to have been killed. The driver of the first semitrailer appeared uninjured and refused medical attention, police said.

East-bound I-70 is currently covered with debris from the crash and the east-bound lanes were expected to remain closed for several hours.

The identities of those in the second semitrailer were not immediately known. As of 6 p.m., the cab of the second semitrailer was still smoldering from the fire.

It appeared the second semitrailer failed to slow for the construction area, police said.

Indiana State Police, the Riley Fire Department, Honey Creek Fire Department and Vigo County Sheriff’s Department all responded to the crash. A helicopter ambulance also responded to the scene but was not used.
