Tax returns are due Tuesday, and the U.S. Postal Service advises taxpayers to double check addressing and postage on mailed returns.
“The most common mistakes Americans make in mailing their forms are not including enough postage and not providing the correct IRS mailing address,” Terre Haute Postmaster Mark Jarrett said in a release. “After the first ounce — which usually covers four, letter-sized sheets — mailers need to add 20 cents for each additional ounce.”
“Post offices are not extending retail hours on tax day so customers are encouraged to mail early in the day,” Jarrett said.
Taxes are normally due April 15. If that falls on a weekend, it is due on the first following Monday. It is different this year as Monday is Emancipation Day, which is a holiday in Washington, D.C. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act by President Lincoln in 1862, which freed the slaves in the District of Columbia.
Emancipation Day has been an official public holiday in D.C. since 2005 and has been responsible for shifting tax due dates in 2007 and 2011 (for the 2006 and 2010 income tax filings)
Taxpayers already got one more day this year of not filing taxes as 2012 is a Leap Year, which gave an extra day in February.
In sending taxes, the IRS offers suggestions if taxes are mailed for a paper return:
• Use peel-off labels. Corrections can be made on the label.
• Never send cash.
• If a taxpayer itemizes, a taxpayer may be able to deduct the convenience fee charged for paying individual income taxes with a credit card as a miscellaneous itemized deduction on Form 1040, Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. The deduction is subject to a 2-percent limit.
• If paying by check or money order, make sure it is payable to the “United State Treasury.”
• Provide on front of check or money order the correct name, address, Social Security number, daytime telephone number, tax year and form number.
• Complete and include Form 1040-V payment voucher when mailing your payment to the IRS and double-check the IRS mailing address.
