UPDATE: Clay County man in fair condition after crash

CLAY COUNTY — A Clay County man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Sunday after a one-vehicle accident on Rio Grande Avenue just east of Miami Gardens Street.

Donald Ray Miller, 58, of rural Brazil, was listed in fair condition in the critical care unit today at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Miller had to be extricated from a 1994 Dodge pickup truck that went off the road for an unknown reason at about 2 p.m. The westbound truck crashed through a fence on the south side of the road, traveled about 150 yards through a pasture and came to rest against a chain link fence.

Vigo County Sheriff's Deputy Rory Leech reported that the vehicle was not registered to Miller, and a records check of the license plate on the truck showed it was a stolen license plate. Also, Miller had a suspended driver’s license as a habitual traffic violator for life.

Leech submitted criminal charges against Miller to the Vigo County Prosecutor for theft, driving as a habitual traffic violator for life, and failure to provide proof of insurance.

Toxicology reports on Miller are pending.

Deputy Leech was assisted at the scene by the Clay County Sheriff's Department, TransCare Ambulance and Nevins Township Fire Department.
