Life-changing event prompts Angell to sell after more than three decades in business

TERRE HAUTE — Angell’s Food Centers have been a family-operated business for the past 30 years in Sullivan and 35 years in Linton.

Company President Joe Angell said a decision to sell the groceries, effective Monday, to Baesler’s Market of Terre Haute was difficult, but was prompted after the death of his son, Mark Angell, 49, who died May 8, 2011, while training for the annual Habitat for Humanity Cover Indiana Bicycle Tour Ride.

Last year, the local leg of the race was to be about a 62-mile route from Linton to Bedford. Mark Angell had completed about 33 miles of a 40-mile training ride when he collapsed.

“After 35 years, and the turn of events, it is hard to let go,” Angell said Wednesday. “Things change and you have to move on, so that is what we are doing. We think [the sale] is a positive thing for the communities.”

“I have three daughters that work in the store and have for a long time, but mostly did clerical work,” said Angell, who is 77 and semi-retired. “The girls did not have any desire to manage the stores, so when Mark passed away, that changed the complexion of the business completely.”

Angell’s Food Center opened in Linton in November 1976 with its Sullivan store following in May 1977. Angell said he started in the grocery business in August, 1951 with Kroger Co.

“I spent 25 years with them before I went out on my own,” he said. “It has been very rewarding and the communities have been very good to us and we really, really appreciate it, with the customers that we have had, we really appreciate it down through the years.”

The Linton store is in its own shopping center, while the Sullivan grocery store is also part of building that contains a state license branch office and a CVS Pharmacy. Baesler’s will rent both the Sullivan and Linton store locations from Angell.

“When we determined it was the right time to sell, we put it up and we had other options, but the Baeslers have been in business years and years and years. They are independent and they are community-minded,” Angell said.

“It is very apparent that they take good care of their employees and are active in their community and that was a big factor in our decision,” he said. The Angell stores have 110 to 130 employees.

Baesler’s began in 1894 when George C. Baesler and Herman H. Wittenbrock opened a meat market in Terre Haute. Baesler took sole control of the market in 1906, naming it Baesler’s Meat Market. The Baesler family has been in business ever since. Current owner, and fourth generation, Bob Baesler took over the family business in 1987. The market moved into its current Terre Haute location at 2900 Poplar St. in 2000.
