Vigo County Treasurer: Accountant Bramble tops Morris

TERRE HAUTE — A certified public accountant overcame a Terre Haute City Council member to gain the Democratic bid for Vigo County treasurer.

James W. (Jim) Bramble defeated Don W. Morris 4,230 votes to 3,281; he does not yet have an opponent in the November election. Republicans did not field a candidate for county treasurer and have until noon June 30 to select a candidate through a party caucus.

Vote totals are unofficial until certified by the Vigo County Election Board by noon May 18.

Bramble, 59, served as the Vigo County auditor from 2000 to 2008. He was appointed by party caucus for a year and won two elected terms. Morris was first elected to the Terre Haute City Council in 2007 and re-elected to a second term last year.

“I think name recognition was probably equal, but what put me over the top I think was that voters recognized my qualifications for the office,” Bramble said. “It is an accounting job and I have been doing that for the last 30 years. We also got out and worked the precincts.

“We got yards signs out and we did what we could to win an election,” Bramble said. “I am please with the results and it will be nice to take a little break from the campaign.”

Telephone messages seeking comment were left on Morris’ cellular telephone. Morris could not be reached as of press time.
