TREES Inc.’s shoe collection drive resumes

TERRE HAUTE — America will celebrate America Recycles Day on Thursday. TREES Inc. has already started the celebration and will continue the festivities through Friday.

Earlier this year the TREES Inc. Earth Day Committee conducted a shoe collection drive. During that time approximately 800 pairs of shoes where collected at locations around the community. The Earth Day Committee is back at it again with a last push of the year to reach the goal of collecting 1,000 pairs, in total.

“TREES Inc.’s main goal is to let people know to never throw unwanted athletic shoes in the trash, which end up in a landfill,” said Joy Sacopulos, a TREES Inc. member.

Many of the shoes previously collected were given a new lease on life. Those pairs that were in excellent or good condition were given to Terre Haute Catholic Charities and Wabash Valley Goodwill Industries.

“There are a lot of ways to help your community and this is one of those ways. We are always grateful to partner with organizations who share our mission. A pair of shoes to a child or a senior can really show hope in their future,” Catholic Charities agency director John Etling said.

“Organizations that conduct donation drives, on behalf of Goodwill Industries, help provide work for people with work related barriers,” Wabash Valley Goodwill Industries director Bill Tennis said.

Collection barrels will be placed at these locations:

• Vigo County Public Library main branch

• Fire station at the west end of Plaza North, 13th Street and Fort Harrison Road.

• Fire station on West Margaret Avenue near Indiana 63

• Fire station just outside Deming Park on Fruitridge Avenue
