Sullivan gets grant to develop long-term plan for city

SULLIVAN — The state has approved a request from the city of Sullivan to help fund a comprehensive planning grant.

Sullivan Mayor Clint Lamb said in a news release that the assistance is coming from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

The city has retained Beam, Longest and Neff LLC in cooperation with Strategic Development Group Inc. to oversee the creation of the document. Kenna Consulting submitted the grant application for the city.

“As promised from the onset in January, Sullivan will no longer aimlessly wander without direction,” Lamb said. “This is the first comprehensive master plan since 1945, and I am tickled to death that it will be 90 percent funded with federal dollars.”

Since taking office, Lamb and his administration have made long-term plans a top priority as a part of the City’s Hometown Pride Restoration Initiative. The mayor has been working with the Sullivan Plan Commission since January to make this a reality.

The Plan Commission, led by President Jim Exline, has been assigned the task of molding the plan by working with Beam, Longest and Neff and Strategic Development Group.

“This is not going to be a case where a firm comes in and tells us what we need,” Lamb said. “This will serve the city as a living, breathing document that will be prepared with much input from local residents on what direction Sullivan needs to go.”

The mayor said the plan could take up to a year to prepare before implementation.

“If you’re going to play the game, you better come ready to compete. And that is exactly what we are doing. Finally, things are moving again in Sullivan and we are getting back on the map,” Lamb said.

This is the second OCRA grant Sullivan has received this year. The city was  in September approved for $441,000 from an OCRA grant. Those funds will be used to demolish Sullivan’s old Central School. The new plan will help determine that site’s future development, Lamb said.
