Valentine's Day a rosy business

Florists’ fingers form Valentine bouquets to honor love in bloom

TERRE HAUTE — Red roses, mixed bouquets and even a bonsai tree or two are being delivered today on perhaps the nation’s sweetest holiday.

Valentine’s Day is a big holiday for florists throughout the Wabash Valley.

“It is the biggest holiday as far as fresh flowers go,” said Laura Cook Lyle, co-owner of Cowan and Cook Florist, 525 N. 21 St.

Orders placed for sweethearts started picking up about two weeks ago, Lyle said. About 10 percent of the orders went out Monday, while the bulk will be delivered today.

“Roses are always popular,” she said, “and we’ll do a great deal of those. But the mixed bouquets with a Valentine theme are also popular. A lot of our customers leave it up to us what arrangement to send, within a certain price range.”

Interestingly, Lyle said, the florist shop usually gets a couple of orders for bonsai trees each holiday.

Mother’s Day is also a big holiday for flowers, but that early summer holiday includes many more potted plants, Lyle said.

At the Poplar Flower Shop at the corner of 18th and Poplar streets, shop owner Jim Sitarski said many of the red rose arrangements this year include while lilies.

Roses and mixed bouquets are the majority of the orders placed on Valentine’s Day, he said, and today will be a big business day for the shop.

He said he expects a lot of orders to be placed today by last-minute callers, but those will have to be picked up because all of the delivery times are full.

“We’ll do a lot of cash and carry today,” he said.
