Brazil man dies in motorcycle crash after fleeing police

Passenger from Terre Haute airlifted to Indianapolis hospital

PUTNAM COUNTY — A Brazil man died and a Terre Haute woman was seriously injured in a Tuesday night motorcycle crash that ended a police chase.

Driver David L. Godsey, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Passenger Jolene D. McCall, 25, was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with multiple life-threatening injuries. She remained in the neurocritical care unit this morning.

The Indiana State Police Putnamville District is investigating the crash on U.S. 40 near County Road 625 West in Putnam County. Godsey apparently lost control of the cycle while fleeing officers of the Brazil City Police Department. The preliminary investigation revealed that at 9:49 p.m., a Brazil Police officer attempted to stop a red 1996 Honda RF 3 motorcycle eastbound on Pinckley Street near Murphy Avenue for speeding 57 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone.

The cycle continued eastbound at speeds near 100 mph and then turned north on County Road 200 East continuing northbound to U.S. 40. The cycle turned eastbound on U.S. 40 with Clay County Sheriff’s deputies and Brazil Police units in pursuit. Speeds were around 100 mph as officers pursued the motorcycle into Putnam County.

At 9:55  p.m. on U.S. 40 and near Putnam County road 625 West, the driver of the motorcycle lost control and traveled off the south side of the roadway, ending the 8.5-mile pursuit. The driver and passenger were ejected from the cycle with both riders striking a wooden fence and drainage culvert. Neither rider was found wearing a helmet by medical personnel, although one helmet was found on the ground at the scene.

Putnam County Chief Deputy Coroner David Brown was on the scene and preliminarily determined that Godsey died of blunt force trauma. Toxicology results are pending. Godsey did not have a valid Indiana driver’s license.

The crash is under investigation by ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie. Assisting were the Putnam County and Clay County sheriff’s departments, Brazil  and Cloverdale police departments, Putnam County Operation Life, Reelsville Fire/Rescue and AirEvac air ambulance.
