Delegation in Washington touting Terre Haute to federal officials

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce delegation is in Washington, D.C., hoping to gain the attention of congressional leaders for ongoing projects.

Projects include an overpass on Margaret Avenue extending over railroad tracks at 19th Street; continuing the city’s Rural Health Innovation Collaborative (RHIC) district; and enhancing the use of unmanned aerial vehicles at the Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field, said Ken Brengle, president and chief executive officer of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce.

Brengle said the delegation is not asking for direct federal funds on this trip, but is pointing out what projects are needed and what they will likely cost.

“This is a way to keep contact with our congressional delegation. There will probably not be a lot that will happen between now and the [U.S. presidential] elections, but at least we are making contacts and laying some of the issues out that we see, so the congressional staff people know what we are interested in,” Brengle said.

“Right now there is not a lot of opportunities to ask for funding and our effort now is to make sure that we are getting these issues out and push for them more after the election is over. We still feel we need to meet with staff members,” Brengle said.

The Terre Haute delegation includes Brengle; David Wulf, vice president of Templeton Coal Co.; and Ken Baker, director of human relations at Applied Extrusion Technologies; and Andy Stadler, a retired accountant; Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett,; Greg Goode, director of governmental relations for Indiana State University; and Ann Valentine, chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College Wabash Valley Region.

The group will also try to keep Terre Haute on the map with federal officials when it comes to any new prison construction projects, Brengle said.

The group will meet today with Charles Samuels Jr., director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Brengle said.

The delegation, Brengle said, intends to meet with staff of U.S. Reps. Todd Rokita, a Republican; Joe Donnelly, a Democrat; Todd Young, a Republican; Larry Bucshon, a Republican; and Republican U.S. Sens. Dan Coats and Richard Lugar.
