Sunday Garfield Towers fire investigated

TERRE HAUTE — Investigators are looking into a suspicious fire that occurred Sunday night at Garfield Towers.

No arrests have been made in the incident, which was reported around 10:21 p.m. in a second-floor common area.

Lt. Edward Tompkins told the Tribune-Star on Monday that investigation into the incident continues. People at the scene were quickly able to extinguish the fire, but the Terre Haute Fire Department did respond to the scene. The building was evacuated for a brief time.

Tompkins, an arson investigator with the Terre Haute Police Department, said authorities are looking into whether there is some connection with a May fire that occurred in the sixth-floor lounge area of the apartment building. The May fire resulted in injuries to a towers resident, Fred Poore, who later died at an Indianapolis hospital.

The May fire was ruled arson. That fire and smoke spread from the commons area to adjoining living units, resulting in the evacuation and relocation of residents to temporary shelters.

Tompkins said the investigation into the May fire remains active, but no arrest has been made in that arson.
