Tractor-trailer's high load damages bridge over I-70

TERRE HAUTE — Detour signs have been placed along Frye Road, which is closed at Margaret Avenue on both sides of a bridge over Interstate 70, because of damage from a tractor-trailer that was carrying too high of a load.

The driver of the tractor trailer for Wabash Valley Asphalt Co. was cited Tuesday by the Indiana State Police for an over-height load. The maximum height allowed on Indiana roadways, without a special permit, is 13 feet, 6 inches. The load was 14 feet, 8 inches tall, Indiana State Police report.

The low-boy trailer, carrying an excavator, was moving eastbound on the interstate attempting to travel under the overpass when it damaged three of six bridge support steel beams, said Debbie Calder, spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Calder said Friday a district bridge engineer has not yet reached a determination on repair costs and requirements. It may be “a couple weeks,” Calder said, before INDOT has cost estimates and a projected time frame for the bridge to reopen.

“Repairs are needed first before the bridge is open,” Calder said.

The repair cost will be covered by Wabash Valley Asphalt Co. or its insurance company, Calder said.

Jerry Lindsay, superintendent of the Vigo County Highway Department, said alternative routes have been posted on Frye Road, which is called Frye Street by 911 designations. A marked detour route on the north side of Interstate 70 will direct drivers north to Crossland Road which turns into Palmer Street and then to Indiana 42. Another route is at Frye Road, go west on Margaret Avenue to Indiana 46.

On the south side of Interstate 70, a marked detour will direct motorists south on Frye Road to Moyer Road. Motorists can go west to Indiana 46 or continue south on Frye Road to Riley and pick up Indiana 46.

Frye Road is considered a minor arterial road, with a low traffic count, between Margaret Avenue and Indiana 42, said Jackie Mitchell, transportation planner for West Central Indiana Economic Development District. The road had an average daily traffic of 543 vehicles in May 2010, the last time a 48-hour traffic count was taken, Mitchell said.

The agency will take new traffic counts in 2013, but does use an average adjusted daily traffic count in years when direct counts are not made. Those adjusted counts show slightly lower daily vehicle traffic counts for 2011 and 2012, Mitchell added.
