11th anniversary of 9/11

Reflections, observances today as the world remembers terrorist attacks

TERRE HAUTE — The first time Malia Mohan made a Catholic rosary out of twine, it took her a few days.

Now, Mohan has it down to about a half hour, even though the camouflage twine rosary calls for more than 50 knots.

Mohan is the coordinator of campus ministries at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, and making rosaries out of twine is one of several activities she has planned today to observe the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks — also known as Patriot Day.

The rosaries are destined for Catholic soldiers overseas to take into the field or into combat, she said. “They can keep it on their person, whether in their pocket or around their neck,” Mohan said.

She’s taught a few students to make them and they’ll begin their effort at 7:30 p.m. in the Le Fer Hall lobby. She hopes they can make about 15 to 20.

Other events on campus today include a reflection and moment of silence at 9 a.m. as well as letter writing and care packages from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mohan hopes to put together about 50 care packages, and accompanying letters, destined for service members in Afghanistan. Some of the care packages will go to military personnel who are friends of Woods students.

Others will go to service members who don’t have families or haven’t received care packages, Mohan said.

All events are in the Le Fer lobby.

“I think it’s important to remember and memorialize people who died that day and people who have died in wars since then while defending our freedom,” Mohan said.

The war in Afghanistan goes on, and students want to recognize those who serve, including their personal friends putting their lives on the line.

“I think it’s important to do that every year and not just the 10th anniversary,” Mohan said.

Indiana State University also plans a ceremony to mark the 11th anniversary of 9/11. A program will take place at 8:30 p.m. at Dede Plaza, and a silent candlelight procession will follow.

The Order of Omega academic honorary for fraternities and sororities is coordinating the vigil, which drew more than 1,000 participants last year.

Natalie Brewster, graduate adviser to the academic honorary, said there was discussion about not having a program this year, but students voted unanimously to continue the vigil.

A vigil has been conducted every year since 9/11, she said. “We always have a pretty good turnout,” she said.

In observance of Patriot Day, the Vigo County School Corp. is asking schools to fly U.S. flags at half-mast, said Holly Pies, curriculum coordinator.

If they choose, schools also can observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., which is when the first plane hit the World Trade Center in the 2001 terrorist attacks.
