State rests in Buza trial; defense to begin this afternoon

ROCKVILLE — The prosecution has rested its case in the attempted murder trial of Zachary Buza of Terre Haute.

The jury in Parke Circuit Court heard Buza in a videotaped interview tell Indiana State Police detectives that he knew there was a likelihood that shooting at police on July 22, 2012, could injure or kill an officer.

That is the day that police responded to a domestic dispute on Main Street in Rosedale, and the day Buza was arrested after a three-hour standoff with police. Buza has been accused of trying to kill ISP Trooper Michael Organ by shooting in the direction of his patrol car, behind which the officer had sought cover, three times during the incident.

Buza has been charged with seven felony counts, including attempted murder, attempted voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and strangulation.

The defense team is expected to begin calling witnesses this afternoon when the trial resumes after a lunch break. Attorney Jim Bruner told Judge Sam Swaim that he will also have an expert witness testify Friday morning.

Closing arguments are expected Friday afternoon, to be followed by jury deliberations.
