Buza jury hears technical evidence

ROCKVILLE — A Parke County jury heard the technical side of criminal investigation Wednesday during testimony in the attempted murder trial of Zachary Buza.

Hundreds of photographs were entered into evidence, showing the scene of the three-hour standoff in Rosedale on July 22, 2012, as well as police cars struck by bullets, and injuries sustained by people at the scene.

Buza, 19, faces seven felony counts – including attempted murder, attempted voluntary manslaughter, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and strangulation – in connection with a standoff with police at his girlfriend’s residence.

Sgt. Kris Fitzgerald of the Indiana State Police testified about more than 100 photographs, along with the antique World War II rifle allegedly fired by Buza from the bathroom window of a home on Main Street toward police in the street.

The jury also saw photos of blood reportedly from Buza inside the home. Buza had been injured by the homeowner after an altercation involving a baseball bat.

Firearms instructor Jerrod Baugh of the Indiana Excise Police also testified about the gunfire exchanged between Buza, Trooper Michael Organ and Rosedale deputy marshall Kevin Bratcher.

And ISP Trooper James Cody testified about the trajectory of bullets that struck Organ’s police car. Organ and Bratcher had taken cover behind the car when Buza broke out a bathroom window and fired the rifle at police responding to the scene of a reported domestic disturbance.

Testimony will resume this morning in Parke Circuit Court in Rockville.
