Man, reportedly armed with knives, faces charges in attempted residential entry

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces a charge of residential entry after he allegedly tried to enter a neighbor’s house while armed with household knives.

Brent Allen, 57, was arrested Wednesday evening after Terre Haute Police responded to the report of an attempted burglary in progress at a home in the 3400 block of South Center Street.

Detective Jonathan Vandevender testified Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 1 that the alleged victim told police that she was leaning against a screen door when it was opened suddenly and she fell outside. The woman said she looked up and saw Allen holding a large steak knife, asking her where some people had gone.

The woman said she fled inside her home and locked the back door, then noticed Allen allegedly trying to open the front door of her home, which was also locked. The woman reportedly tried to call 911, but instead called her daughter, who notified police.

When officers arrived at the scene, Vandevender said, Allen was allegedly walking away from the victim’s home, carrying a knife in each hand.

Judge John Roach found probable cause for Allen’s arrest on a charge of attempted residential entry, and set his bond at $5,000 cash only.

Formal charges in the case are to be filed by Tuesday.
