Woman gets 20 years for apartment fire

TERRE HAUTE — A woman who admitted to setting a January 2012 apartment fire has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Kenna D. Cooper, 43, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in Vigo Superior Court 3 to class-B felony arson for a fire she set in the 600 block of South Center Street.

She was sentenced Monday by Judge David Bolk, who stated that after Cooper has served 18 years of her sentence she can petition the court to serve the final two years in either a community corrections program or a secured psychiatric facility.

Cooper was arrested about three weeks after the fire by Terre Haute Police when she stated that she became upset at finding pornographic images on her husband’s cell phone. Cooper told police she went into a vacant apartment across the hall from her apartment and lit a candle that had been placed near a curtain, resulting in the fire to the structure.

Cooper had two prior arrests related to arson. The plea agreement dropped a probation violation connected to a 2007 arson case, and dropped a habitual offender charge.
