Shooting injures teenager, lands Terre Haute man in jail

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon after a shooting Monday afternoon that injured a teenager.

Robert E. Harrison, 20, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Tuesday where probable cause was found for his arrest on the class-C felony.

Detective Cpl. Darren Long testified that police were called to Union Hospital around 3:22 p.m. Monday to investigate a 15-year-old person who had been shot in the face.

Long said that he interviewed people who had been at a house in the 2100 block of North 22nd Street when the incident occurred in an upstairs bedroom. Long said he learned that the juvenile was visiting the residence when Harrison picked up a .22-caliber handgun that he thought was unloaded. The gun went off, striking the juvenile in the face. Harrison transported the teen to the hospital for treatment.

Long said that Harrison told police that he did not believe that the gun was loaded when he picked it up. The detective also stated that a 1-year-old child was in the room when the incident occurred.

Judge Michael Lewis ordered Harrison held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $25,000 cash only. A hearing date for Harrison is set for 11 a.m. Friday.
