Sisters of Providence to host “A Winter Night of Prayer”

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — The Sisters of Providence invite people of all faith traditions to St. Mary-of-the-Woods for “A Winter Night of Prayer” in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel from 7 to 10 p.m. on Jan. 24.

“Winter oftentimes is a time when people are kind of stuck in their homes. The nights are long, and what better way to spend the evening than in quiet and reflection,” said Sister Paula Damiano, programming coordinator for Providence Spirituality and Conference Center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Participants may come for one, two or all three hours. Each segment will begin on the hour with 15 minutes of reflective reading and music followed by quiet prayer time. At the end of each hour, refreshments will be available in the nearby Providence Hall dining room.

The ornate, marble-adorned Blessed Sacrament Chapel is located down the corridor from the main entrance to the Providence Spirituality and Conference Center. The chapel will be lit by candlelight for the evening of prayer.

“We feel that we have a jewel in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel — in its physical beauty as well as its atmosphere of peace and quiet. And we really want St. Mary-of-the-Woods to be a place where people of all faith traditions can come to find that solace and peace that people are looking for,” Sister Paula said.

“We hope that people will come away with a deeper sense of quiet within themselves and with a realization of God's gracious goodness and love,” Sister Paula said.

A Winter Night of Prayer is part of a series of spiritual programs and retreats being offered by the Sisters of Providence this year. Among these are monthly Taize prayer events focused on water themes as part of The Year of the River as well as retreat opportunities such as “24 Hours with Saint Mother Theodore Guerin” on Feb. 15-16.
