Zumba, noon countdown get New Year’s Eve started

TERRE HAUTE — Party plans are kicking off as early as this morning with party people ready to usher in 2013.

Terre Haute Zumba instructor Amy Maesch will open up her class to the public inside Coaches Corner at 750 Oak St. with a “2013 Bling It On!” theme and food drive.

Zumba, an aerobic dance exercise class, incorporates a variety of musical genres ranging from hip-hop to salsa as participants burn calories to the blood-pumping beat.

Maesch’s Zumba party will run 9:30 to 11 a.m. with child care provided for $1 per child, and canned food donations for Terre Haute Catholic Charities are encouraged in addition to the $5 cost.

“You can practice your dance moves and burn more than 1,000 calories before 2012 is history,” Maesch said Sunday.

Ultimate Fitness and Bariatric Center Zumba instructor Ron Hernandez said his gym behind Honey Creek Mall will also host a New Year’s Eve exercise dance party from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., free to members or $5 to the public.

A party for kids is also being hosted at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum’s New Year’s Noon Celebration, beginning at 10 a.m.

The program, which will include kids making crowns and noisemakers, is free with museum admission, and the facility will be open until 2 p.m. Museum members and children under 24 months old get in free. The party culminates in a ball drop at the stroke of noon and dance party.

Parties are planned throughout the community, and the law firm of Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin is again sponsoring free rides home for those who may have overimbibed. Rides with Yellow Cab are available between 8 p.m. today and 3 a.m. Tuesday in Terre Haute and West Terre Haute.

The rides will be from a bar or restaurant to one’s home, not to another drinking location. Reservations are encouraged and partiers can call 812-478-5000 for more information.
