Child removed from home after fire; mother faces neglect charge

TERRE HAUTE — A pot of burned beans and an empty wine bottle were found at the scene of a cooking fire investigated by police who arrested a Terre Haute woman for neglect of a dependent.

Jenifer M. Jackson, 33, appeared Wednesday morning in Vigo Superior Court 1 where Senior Judge Michael Eldred released her on her own recognizance after learning that Jackson’s toddler child had been removed from the home, and that the family was complying with child services requirements.

According to court records, on June 28 at about 6:30 p.m., security for the Terre Haute Housing Authority was called to an apartment in the 2900 block of Thompson Street for a reported kitchen fire. When no one answered the door, the security officers entered the apartment and found a large amount of smoke coming from a pot of beans on the stove.

Security officers found Jackson passed out on a couch, and her toddler unresponsive in the room, court records stated. The apartment was also littered with trash and had scissors, tobacco, razors and uneaten food on the floor, according to records.

The child was taken outside where she woke up. She was taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital and was treated for smoke inhalation.

Jackson reportedly told investigators that she drank an entire bottle of wine and fell asleep on the couch while the food was cooking on the stove.

Eldred ordered Jackson to comply with the Department of Child Services directives concerning her daughter. Jackson is to return to court Sept. 17 for a hearing on the class-D felony charge of child neglect.
