Three girls leave Gibault campus

Trio apprehended near Interstate 70

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County law enforcement’s response Tuesday resulted in the apprehension of three juveniles reported missing from the Gibault  campus south of Terre Haute.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 7:30 a.m. from Gibault Inc., reporting a trio of girls missing from the campus. The three were considered runaways.

While en route to Gibault, the Sheriff’s Office began receiving calls from homeowners just south of the campus, concerning three teenagers approaching residents, attempting to garner a ride to Indianapolis.

Sheriff’s officials immediately launched automated telephone alert to advise citizens within a two-mile radius of Gibault. Sheriff’s deputies along with Indiana State Police and Terre Haute City Police K-9 began searching the residential area.

After a several-hours search in which nearby outbuildings and properties were searched, it was learned that a passer-by had given three girls a ride to the area of the Holiday Inn at the U.S.41/Interstate 70 interchange.

Sheriff units proceeded to the area of the Holiday Inn and established a four-block perimeter to contain the teens to the area. A second automated alert was being prepared when a citizen flagged down Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom to report that she observed three suspicious juveniles hiding behind a garage just west of Sixth Street and Weston Drive. Police then converged on that area.

Within seconds, Chief Deputy Cottom spotted the three runaways hiding between bushes and a garage. They immediately took off running west before splitting up. A foot pursuit ensued with two of the teens running north. Chief Cottom and Deputy Robert Bartlett along with ISP Troopers were successful in taking the two runaways into custody. The third teenager ran south and was apprehended by 1st Sgt. Debbie Terrell.

The three teens were transported to the Vigo County Juvenile Center.

During the time that the juveniles were at large, five nearby schools in the Vigo County School Corporation were placed on lockdown.
