Indiana American Water has issued a boil water advisory affecting about 800 customers in Farmersburg after a boil water advisory was issued by the Shelburn system, which serves as a source of supply for the Farmersburg system. Shelburn customers also are under a boil advisory.
The boil advisory was issued after residual chlorine levels fell below 0.2 parts per million in the Shelburn distribution system after failure of chlorine feed equipment over the weekend. Although Indiana American Water did not use water from the Shelburn system on Sunday when the problem occurred and chlorine levels in the Farmersburg system remained above 0.2 parts per million at all times, the boil water advisory is being issued as a precaution to ensure customer safety.
Customers in Farmersburg are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for one minute. Tap water can be used for washing/bathing.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management mandates boil water advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event chlorine levels drop below minimum standards.
According to company officials, boil water advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer's best interests in mind. It's possible, but unlikely, bacteria could be present in the distribution system under certain circumstances.
During the boil water advisory, the water company performs a series of tests to determine if the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. The boil advisory will expire at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, assuming sample results taken from several sites within the affected area show no bacterial contamination is present. Any additional information regarding this boil advisory will be shared with residents through local media outlets.
Indiana American Water serves about 800 customers, or a population of about 2,000 in the Farmersburg area.
