Police: Ex-ISU coach shatters glass in press box after Bell game

TERRE HAUTE — Shattered glass in the Memorial Stadium press box has an investigation underway with at least one victim reportedly treated at a local hospital.

“We’re still investigating it,” Bill Mercier, director of Indiana State University’s Public Safety Department, said Saturday of the event.

According to Mercier, Dennis Raetz allegedly struck the glass while inside the press box watching the Victory Bell Game between the Terre Haute North and South football teams Friday night. Raetz, now retired, is a former ISU football coach and most recently ISU’s director of football development.

Shattered glass fell on fans in the stands, causing minor cuts. “There were several,” Mercier said of victims, noting one person was treated and released from an area hospital, “in addition to Dennis.”

Raetz said over the telephone Saturday that he did not punch the glass, but slapped it at the end of the game. “Just when the game ended, I slapped the glass and it broke,” he said. “I hit it with an open hand. I didn’t punch it.”

Raetz’s son, Mark, is the coach for the Terre Haute South Braves, who lost the nail-biter 22-21 in overtime to a final 2-point conversion by the Patriots.

Mercier said his department should have the investigation wrapped up Monday. Witnesses and victims were still being interviewed Saturday evening.

Once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s office for review.
