Five Tribune-Star staffers win awards in state news contest

INDIANAPOLIS — Five Tribune-Star staffers took home seven awards, three for first place, at the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors’ awards ceremony Saturday in Indianapolis.

First-place winners were Tribune-Star Editor Max Jones, columnist/editorial writer Mark Bennett and reporter Arthur Foulkes.

Jones took first place for editorial writing, while Bennett got a second place in the same category.

The judges said of Jones’ editorial writing: “Solid, well-written editorial on the fallen police officer, a piece that likely served as the community’s narrative for this tragedy. I particularly liked the jail escapee editorial and the writer’s resolute demand for answers from a sheriff who defended his charges as blameless. That kind of foolishness needs to be challenged and the writer did so clearly and pointedly.”

Bennett, along with former Tribune-Star photographer Rachel Keyes, took first place in the use of multimedia for the story “Walking in the Shadows of 9/11.”

The judges said: “Compelling, 10-years-later study of this great American tragedy. Bennett clearly immersed himself in this project and his and other staffers’ efforts paid off. Great use of the Web to play the enormity of this project. Liked the photos stacked alongside the Web stories; each served as its own little sidebar. You served your readers well.”

Foulkes won first place for nondeadline news reporting for the report, “Can cause serious side effects,” about the side effects of osteoporosis drugs. Bennett took third place in the feature series category, again for “Walking in the shadows of 9/11.”

News Editor Zach Taylor took second place for page one design and reporter Lisa Trigg took third place in the nondeadline news reporting.

“I am real proud of the work of the editorial staff; it is top-notch,” said Tribune-Star Publisher B.J. Riley. “I think that they are true professionals and obviously their peers think the same. It is terrific that they are getting the accolades that they deserve.”

Awards were based on work done in 2011. Entries were judged by AP member newspaper editors in Michigan.
