2 deputies shot, man dies in Greene County shootout

OWENSBURG — A man was found dead Wednesday inside a rural Indiana home where he had barricaded himself, hours after he allegedly opened fire on officers and wounded two sheriff’s deputies, state police said.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil said an autopsy was expected today to determine whether 25-year-old Michael Lane Jr. was fatally shot by police or died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The body was found by a state police bomb squad robot about two hours after the shootout, Durnil said.

Neither of the wounded officers, Greene County deputies Jim O’Malley and Brad Deckard, suffered life-threatening injuries in Wednesday morning’s shootout near Owensburg about 20 miles southwest of Bloomington, Durnil said. State troopers also were involved in the shootout, but none were injured.

Deckard was treated for a shoulder wound and released from IU Health Bloomington, he said. O’Malley, who Durnil said suffered gunshot wounds to his lower legs, was listed in fair condition Wednesday at the Bloomington hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Amanda Roach.

Shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, Durnil said a woman called police and reported a domestic disturbance at the rural residence that’s about a mile north of the entrance to the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center.

When police arrived, he said the woman was no longer at the home and Lane was barricade alone inside.

“We were there to help, but once the officers were there they were met with gunfire. We don’t know if it was something that happened with him or if he planned to do it — we just don’t know,” Durnil  said.

Lane and officers exchanged gunfire with periodic lulls for about 10 minutes before Lane stopped firing, Durnil said.

He said police unsuccessfully tried to contact Lane by calling the telephone at the residence. Lane’s father also gave police his personal cellphone in the hopes that his son would answer and police could negotiate with him, Durnil said.

“We tried to call him on that, tried to call him on other phones, 911 dispatch tried to call as well but there was no response from him at all,” he said.
