Sullivan woman’s DUI arrest leads to discovery of machine gun

TERRE HAUTE — A Sullivan woman faces charges of possession of a machine gun, carrying a handgun without a license and possession of illegal drugs.

Polly Forbus, 53, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 Thursday where Judge David Bolk set a Sept. 10 trial date on nine criminal charges, including four felonies.

She was arrested early Monday on an allegation of driving while intoxicated.

Deputy Khristopher Morris of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reported that he saw a disabled vehicle with a flat tire on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 41 near Jessica Drive. When Morris checked on the driver, he said, he smelled the odor of alcohol on her breath. Forbus failed a field sobriety test.

She was taken to the Vigo County Jail where she tested 0.17 percent blood-alcohol content. An inventory of her purse revealed more than $6,700 in cash, along with pills for which she did not have a prescription. Police reportedly found an unloaded submachine gun and a loaded .44-caliber handgun in her vehicle.

Forbus has been charged with possession of a machine gun, a class-C felony; three counts of class-D felony drug possession; and misdemeanor charges of carrying a handgun without a license, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, driving while intoxicated, and driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent or more.

She posted $35,000 cash bond and was released from the Vigo County Jail on Tuesday. Her next hearing date is set for Aug. 19.
