22-year-old nabbed after high speed chase

TERRE HAUTE — A man who led police on a high-speed chase in southern Vigo County was later arrested on suspicion of resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Speeds reached more than 100 miles per hour in the pursuit, police said.

The Vigo County man arrested, Tony B. Collins, 22, told police he had been consuming beer at a bar “and didn’t stop because he was scared,” according to a Vigo County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Collins had a blood alcohol content of 0.13 percent, police said.

The incident happened late Monday/early Tuesday. Deputy Jason Washburn was driving north on U.S. 41 from Oregon Church Road  when he saw a GMC truck heading south on the highway from Patriot Lane. The vehicle failed to dim its bright lights.

Washburn said he flashed his headlights twice, but the truck’s driver still didn’t dim his lights. Washburn flashed his lights again, and the truck’s driver still failed to dim. As the truck passed Washburn, the sheriff’s deputy made a U-turn and caught up with the truck.

Washburn contacted Central Dispatch and advised them of the vehicle’s plate information and that he was planning on stopping the vehicle in front of Boot City.

A pursuit began, and as the vehicle headed toward Sullivan County, Washburn requested assistance from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.

Collins continued south on U.S. 41 and then turned west on Indiana 246; he pulled the truck into a driveway and quickly exited the vehicle and started for the house.

Other officers arrived and an arrest was made.
