Buza testifies on own behalf at his attempted murder trial

ROCKVILLE — A Terre Haute man accused of attempted murder for shooting at police last year told a jury today that he was not aiming at anything when he shot a rifle out a bathroom window of a home in Rosedale.

Zachary Buza took the witness stand in his own defense during the final day of his Parke Circuit Court trial, and the now-20-year-old man said he only remembers parts of July 22, 2012, and the incidents that occurred on that hot summer day.

Buza admitted that he had consumed vodka and became intoxicated while he was working that day at a property near Rosedale. He said he did not remember returning to the Rosedale residence where his girlfriend lived with her parents, and where he had also resided for the past three weeks.

But Buza said he did remember getting into an argument with his girlfriend’s father, and he remembered being hit in the head with a baseball bat by the older man.

The jury also heard expert testimony from a firearms specialist about the type of rifle that Buza fired at police, and the expertise needed to hit targets.

Closing arguments were expected to begin around 1 p.m., followed by jury deliberations.
