TREES Inc. photo contest winners honored

TERRE HAUTE — The library walls were a forest of leaves and ribbons as winners of the annual Trees Inc. photography contest were announced Wednesday.

Now in its seventh year, the annual program sponsored by TREES Inc., the Vigo County Public Library and the Tribune-Star drew a room full of participants and their families. Awards were given in the categories of both adult amateur and professional, as well as youth. The 2012 contest theme was “Trees Dressed in Bloom.”

Barbara Brugnaux, president of TREES Inc., said the photography contest allows people to appreciate the beauty of trees, and thus inspires them to protect and conserve. The organization sponsors a number of annual events, but this one, she said, remains a favorite.

“And the trees do need our protection,” she said, adding the contest is among the library’s more popular exhibits.

Award presentations were made by Tribune-Star photographer Jim Avelis.

Terri Brunette, an amateur photographer of five years, earned two honorable mentions for her work this year.

“It’s my therapy,” she said, standing next to her pictures, which hang on the library’s west wall. A 30-year employee of J.C. Penney, she said working with nature is particularly enjoyable for her. “I go take pictures of nature because I’m stuck inside all day.”

Evan Curry, 12, likewise earned two honorable mentions for his work. The Otter Creek Middle School student said this is his second year to participate, and he looks forward to next year’s contest.

“I guess I like to see what I can do with the pictures,” he said.

Organizer Chris Schellenberg announced next year’s contest theme will be “Trees and the River,” as a nod to the 2013 Year of the River initiative.
